Columbia College

A 250 Year-old gets a face lift.

As one of the oldest educational institutions in the country, Columbia College represents the component of Columbia University's tradition that spans back to the days when New York was a British Colony.

THE LOGO

The school's signature hand-rendered logo is a reminder of that tradition which harkens back to its original name, King's College. Naturally when it came time to define a visual identity for the College, I started with that logo, creating the first accurate modern recreation from impressions of the original woodcut stamp. This newly digitized College Crown is now used consistently to represent the school and appears everywhere from publications to architectural details in campus buildings.

THE WEB

The Web site further complement's the school's rich tradition through highlighting the College's famous Core Curriculum front-and-center and ensuring that the school's colors of Columbia blue and white are firmly felt in the design. 21st Century enhancements such as a responsive course search on the front page and a dynamic fellowship browser powered by Drupal all ensure that the site has a high degree of utility for students and faculty.

PUBLICATIONS

The yearly course bulletin produced since the mid 19th Century is now produced in a content management system, thanks to my efforts in creating a cascading style sheet that can be applied to the raw content data to create a production-ready PDF document. The system is a huge success, saving the College hundreds of man-hours and thousands of dollars each year in production costs.
